6 AM! Time to go. The Regent is waiting! One hour on the road and we were back in Yendy.
Our first stop was to meet the local chief, the grandson of the king, to pay our respects. This was only protocol as the Regent was our goal. The Regent’s father was murdered 3 years ago and the Regent is his 1st born and in line for the throne. Very important! Niipaak and he are personal friends and have studied the bible together many times. After much ceremony and introductions, we presented him with a very nice study bible and we each received a cola nut (tradition). We then were given a tour of the palace grounds, noticing all the machine gun nests and soldiers on the perimeter, and the water well dug by the church.
Next we were off to the clinic for brunch – chicken and rice. Following this, we traveled 5 hours to the “Mole Game Reserve”.
We were greeted by warthogs and baboons. After one and a half weeks in the bush, I’m not sure who smelled worse. Us or them. The reserve is a nice break at our half way point. Everyone is exhausted.
We have been going on 4 to 5 hours of sleep so far. Here we will recover a bit as there is a small pool, electricity, and running water!
The baboons have been in our trash for a snack. They are not afraid of us at all. We have been told to keep the room locked even when we are in the room! One of the baboons looks a bit like Ted?!
We will have a good meal tonight and some well needed rest.
